Announcements for the Week, 3/37-3/31

3/26/2017

Dear Room 19 Families,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

We have been enjoying learning about all of the different current events that students chose for their Scholars Speak assignments- endangered animals, Great Barrier Reef bleaching, the Manhattan Beach Downtowner, the Hyperloop, and more!

Below, please find some reminders and updates, as well as a brief summary of what we are working on this week.

Information & Updates:
  • MBMS Field Trip 3/29- This Wednesday, all fifth graders will be taking a walking field trip to MBMS.  Please turn in all permission slips tomorrow.  Students should pack a small snack and wear comfortable shoes to walk in.
  • Jog-A-Thon 3/31- On Friday, our class will be participating in the Jog-A-Thon at 8:30 am, please come down to the lower field to cheer us on!
  • Hip-Hop Performance 4/5- Our last Hip-Hop class will be on April 5th, and the students will perform the dance that they have learned during the 10-week class.  All parents are invited to attend our last class from 8:15-9:00, in the cafeteria.
  • There will be no Wordly Wise this week, we will be working on our root word cards (test on Friday).
  • Valet Duty- If you are available for Valet Duty the last week of school, please sign up using this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4fa5a62daafb6-panther64
  • Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser 5/6- If you have not had a chance to sign-up here is the link to volunteer for the fundraiser: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0b4fafad2c7-5thgrade

    • We have library in the afternoon.
  • Wednesday-
    • We have our walking field trip to MBMS.  All students should arrive at 8:00 am, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a small snack.
  • Thursday-
    • We have science lab.
  • Friday-
    • We will have a root word quiz on roots 61-75.
      • This will be the same format as the last quiz- root word definition, true/false, and multiple choice.  Students need to know all of the root definitions for roots 61-75, and be familiar with the derivatives (recognize them and identify them, not write them from memory).
    • JAT is at 8:30am on the lower field.
    • We have an Alley Cats assembly in the afternoon.

What We’re Working on This Week:
  • Reading & Writing- We are working on reading and writing for our Persuasive/Argumentative writing unit.  This week, students will finish reading and collecting evidence to think through various sides of an argument (should chocolate milk be served in schools).  Students will start to formulate their opinion after collecting evidence, and will begin writing.
  • Math- We will be finishing-up Module 4, multiplication and division of fractions.  I have uploaded the parent letters, and lesson videos, to the math page of our class website. Our test will be early next week.
  • Social Studies- Visit Mrs. Stelter's website.
  • Science- We are starting our next unit on Earth's Rotation & Objects in the Sky.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
